I woke up yesterday with one word in my heart: Transcendent. According to Google, it means “beyond or above the range of normal or merely physical human experience.” In particular when used of God, it means “existing apart from and not subject to the limitations of the material universe.” It seems to me we live in a world that needs a good dose of the transcendent. I particularly like the reference to “merely physical human experience.” Most of us live in a state of constant preoccupation with that which is merely human. Our problems are supernatural, not merely human. It’s time to look up.
It’s Sunday. For us, it’s the Lord’s Day, a day dedicated to Him. He is transcendent. In our modern era churches, we often extol the virtues of services that are seeker-friendly and messages that are “relevant” or “practical.” We sing songs about what God has done for me, who I am, what I have, what I need, my problems and the solutions I would suggest to Him. And oh, yeah, never forget how much He loves me. There is really not too much wrong with any of that, but it just feels like today we might need a God who is “not subject to the limitations of the material universe.”
Maybe it’s a good day to be the humble and contrite appellant to a transcendent God. Let’s take at least one moment to focus away from the problem and the pitiful answers that we have to offer. Let’s make time to gaze transfixed at “the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity.” Maybe I should tell Him how much I love Him. Maybe He should be the center, not me. Humor me. Say it with me: “Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods?”
