Not too long ago, I had dinner with a minister friend. It was the end of a long day during a long week. I actually wanted to stay home and rest, but I went because I said I would. The result was that I came away from our time together feeling refreshed and encouraged. The fellowship, the mutual respect, the laughter at our own eccentricities, and the common passion for Jesus gave me a fresh infusion of strength. We all need such people and such moments. It’s a spiritual thing.
As we head for church today, be aware of the people who bring you refreshing by their presence. Mark them down and make it a point to be around them when you can. By the same token, remember that you will have the opportunity to bring refreshing to someone else who needs what you have. Pay attention. Listen, smile, engage, share. You may have the unexpected opportunity to enable a weary believer to keep going. None of us is designed to do this Christian thing alone. Don’t try.
