On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
1 Corinthians 14:3-6 ESV
One of the great blessings of gathering with the family of God is being exposed to the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. The most common manifestation is prophecy, or the equivalent through tongues and interpretation of tongues. Notice the purpose of simple prophecy: building up, encouragement, and consolation. Because He loves us so much, God has provided supernatural ways for us to be strengthened and encouraged. Living the Christian life is not easy. We need the boost. Thank you, Lord!
This particular blessing is designed for use when the saints are gathered because it can come through anyone who is filled with the Holy Spirit. Our leaders are charged with evaluating these utterances to determine if they are from God. None of this can happen as intended over an internet connection. Can you be taught over the internet? Yes. Can you be saved without going to church? Yes. Can you avail yourself of all God’s design for you? No. You need more than information. You need revelation unto transformation. I’m passionate about this: Don’t let Satan and your own inertia steal the blessing of being in the presence of God with the people of God partaking of the gifts of God. Let’s go to church!
