Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Hebrews 3:12-13 ESV
These verses are as pertinent today as they were when they were written. We live in a time when voices are coming at us from every direction. Most of them are speaking doubt, bitterness, victimhood, and pseudo-spiritual drivel. One of the most pervasive lies is that Christianity is an individual thing, a solely personal endeavor: I can stay in my recliner and read my Bible as I listen to my favorite artist sing my favorite tunes. In fact, the Bible repeatedly tells us that we need each other.
This is a warning to Christians: don’t allow the heart to get hardened by sin. It can lead to falling away from faith altogether. The “vaccine” that prevents hardening of the heart includes:
- Take care. Keep your eyes open for trouble. Be aware of the danger, and purposely watch out for the tell-tale signs of unbelief: self-centeredness, increasing resentment, apathy, ungodly speech, etc.
- Exhort one another. I have a two-fold responsibility. First, I encourage others to keep moving forward in faith, then I allow them to do the same for me. I need to be around others. No Lone Rangers (Google it if you’re under 60).
- Do it every day. This is not just a Sunday thing, though it surely should happen on the Lord’s Day. You and I need each other every day that is called “Today.”
Take today as the first day of obeying the Bible in this respect. Get around other believers and encourage someone to keep following Jesus. Listen for God to use them to poke you into action as well. We need one another.
