Sunday Supernaturally: Let’s Get Hungry Again

Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Psalm 107:8-9

“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other!  (16)  But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth!  (17)  You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.”

Revelation 3:15-17

I have had a wonderful week. The last three days have been spent with the students in our Bible school and the local pastor’s group that we work with. The two nights of bible classes were very well-attended. The students were passionate and eager for the Word of God, and God truly showed up. They prayed with passion and worshiped with genuine zeal. His presence was tangible in every class. Saturday morning, we had breakfast with the pastors. They showed up at 8 AM after a late night the night before, engaged with the subject, and then hung around to fellowship until nearly noon.

This all happened in a city where temperatures were over 110 degrees, staying above 100 until nearly midnight. The church was not air-conditioned, so the huge fans made the service sound like a wind tunnel. The traffic was terrible, and gas was selling at over $5 per gallon. Yet there they were! Sweating, and singing, and learning, and being grateful for the opportunity. Now, here’s my point. In the United States, we are whining about how difficult it is to get people to come to church on Sunday, much less several extra nights a week. What’s the difference?

I have believed for over 30 years that God always fills hungry hearts. When He sees sheep who are self-reliant and complacent, He just passes on by. In our Mexican churches, He is finding hungry hearts and filling them. In the U.S. not so much. As of today, I am adjusting the way I pray for revival in our land. I am no longer praying that God pour out His Spirit on our nation. I’m praying that the Church will get hungry again. I’ve seen it before, and I believe I will see it again. Get hungry, my friend.
