What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:1-4 ESV
I’m a big fan of water baptism. It’s such a graphic picture of what happens to us when we identify with Christ by faith. We die, we’re buried, and we’re raised. But we don’t just stand there dripping wet and think that’s all there is to being a Christian.
The same glorious Spirit that raised Christ from the dead now dwells in you and me. This is not a theological construct. You now have the ability to walk in newness of life. You are resurrected by the glory to live in a different way, set apart from your old life and from the world around you. Let’s walk!
The Bible tells us a bunch of things about this new way to walk. Here are just a few:
- walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7
- walk properly as in the daytime. Romans 13:13
- Walk as children of light. Ephesians 5:8
- walk in a manner worthy of the calling. Ephesians 4:1
- walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. Colossians1:10
- walk in love, as Christ loved us. Ephesians 5:2
- walk in him. Colossians 2:6
- Walk in wisdom. Colossians 4:5
- walk properly before outsiders. 1Thessalonians 4:12
- walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16
God’s Spirit lives in you. He gives you the ability to walk in a brand-new way. If you’re struggling in any of these areas, ask God to teach you how to walk. Go to church today expecting to learn to walk. We talk about a “move of the Spirit” in our services, and that’s good. I love the manifestation of the Spirit in power. But I’m more interested in a sensitivity to the Spirit in our lives. Knowing Him, hearing Him, obeying Him – walk this way.
