When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:1-4 NKJV
A few weeks ago our pastor had a word in the Sunday morning service. The gist of it was that we should be alert and ready for some things to happen “suddenly”. That really resonated with me. Our expectations need to be raised. As I meditated on this word, a phrase came to my mind: “One accord, one place, suddenly.” I recognized it from Acts chapter 2. God wants to do some special “suddenlies” in our midst. Sadly, many believers will miss them. They live in disunity, not in unity, and avoid the gathering of the saints.
“Suddenlies” come when we are:
- In one accord: The original word here is a combination of homo (same), and thumos (passion). We are not required to agree on everything. As believers, however, we can be passionate about at least two things. We all love the Lord and can worship Him in one accord. In addition, as part of a local assembly we can be passionate about our unique calling as a people. We have a common mission. Let’s be passionate in one accord.
- In one place: The aftermath of the Great Pandemic of 2020 left many people avoiding church. Maybe they got their feelings hurt by a church person. Maybe they decided that YouTube is the same as being present. Maye they just got lazy. Who knows? The problem is that the Bible says, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.” (Hebrews 10:25) I think that’s pretty clear. Whatever your excuse, that’s what it is: an excuse. The price of staying at home is missing the “suddenlies” that God has for you and for us today.
It’s a wild time in the world. I am counting on a serious uptick in the “suddenly” count. It’s focus time. Let’s get to church, get on the same page, and get our suddenly!
