Sunday Supernaturally: Anointed and Refreshed

Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.

Psalms 133:1-3 ESV

I love David’s rhapsody here about the joy of being together as a group of believers who are all on the same page. He compares it to the anointing oil on the high priest, an illustration of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the midst of the church (Matthew 18:20). Similarly, he compares it to the dew on Mount Hermon, a reminder of the refreshing presence of the Lord that comes like rain on a parched land (Hosea 6:3). Of course, the reverse is also true: When there is strife and bitterness among us, the atmosphere is poisoned and the anointing is diminished.

I’m headed to church this morning checking my heart to be sure I have a clean and godly attitude toward all people, especially those in the household of faith. I would encourage you to do the same. Let’s go for God’s best, not just a good teaching and some music, but a visitation from the Holy One. It’s a day for anointing and refreshing.

Remember Paul’s entreaty to the Philippians:

Your life in Christ makes you strong, and his love comforts you. You have fellowship with the Spirit, and you have kindness and compassion for one another. I urge you, then, to make me completely happy by having the same thoughts, sharing the same love, and being one in soul and mind. Don’t do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble toward one another, always considering others better than yourselves. And look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own.
