Sunday Supernaturally: Appreciate

We beg you, our friends, to pay proper respect to those who work among you, who guide and instruct you in the Christian life. Treat them with the greatest respect and love because of the work they do. Be at peace among yourselves.

(1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 GNB)

This last week I had the privilege of being at a minister’s conference in Mexico.  It has been delightful to fellowship with the good men and women who are serving the people of God in this part of the world.  Though the culture is a little different, I find that the problems of ministry are pretty much the same everywhere: people, provision, and feelings of isolation and inadequacy topping the list. We really do need each other to get this job done.

As you go to church today, appreciate your pastor.  In just the last week, he has had to deal with all kinds of things we often don’t think about. He or she probably had to make huge corporate financial decisions, deal with architectural issues, and be an expert on interior and exterior design. He probably dealt with audio-visual and tech issues that usually require an IT person.  She was asked questions about music, lighting, and accounting. He probably had to deal with human crises like death, illness and divorce. All of these took place at inconvenient times.  She was expected to comfort the afflicted, correct the unruly, and expertly manage multiple personnel groups.  All this while providing first-rate teaching, mentoring and program management.

This would be a good day to show up, serve, give, and encourage.  It makes a difference.
