On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

Many years ago, I asked one of the leaders in my church if he had time to meet with me on Sunday concerning some church business. His response has stayed with me through 4 decades of ministry. He said, “Sure. I set aside Sunday as the Lord’s Day. It belongs entirely to Him.” I like that. Most of us feel a little put upon that we are expected to ser aside an hour our two to attend church and make our nod to God. That was certainly not Joh’s thought when hs usede the term ”The Lord’s Day.”
I’m of the opinion what John was referring to Sunday, the first day of the week. It was considered to be a reminder of the resurrection, and the church gathered on that day. As we gather today on this Lord’s Day, a couple of thoughts:
- Give Him your attention. It’s His day, not yours. Put away the attitude that says, “I am doing Jesus a favor by taking time to go to church.” Adopt the attitude that recognizes the favor He extended you by going to Calvary for you. Honor His Day by dedicating it to Him.
- Take the effort to get “in the Spirit.” We have the privilege of praying with the Spirit, worshipping in the Spirit, and being indwelt by the Spirit. Pay attention to the things of the Spirit today.
- Expect to hear His voice. He has things He wants you to know. He has given you His written Word, set you under a God-ordained ministry, and put His Spirit in you to teach you. Let today be a day of seeking and hearing what God is saying to you and to your church family. He hasn’t stop speaking to the churches.
