Grateful for His Gifts

October is the month when we show appreciation for ministers. This tradition apparently began in 1994 with Clergy Appreciation Day, started by Focus on the Family. Now, it seems we have Clergy Appreciation Month, with the second Sunday specifically dedicated to pastors. Anyway, here we are. I thought it would be a good idea to review what our ‘clergy’ is supposed to be doing and perhaps develop a greater sense of appreciation.

Paul tells us the primary function of all the leadership jobs that Jesus placed in His Church is “equip his people.” The first purpose of the five offices of public ministry is to equip church folks to do works of service. The Greek word for “equip” means to repair or adjust something in order to make it completely ready for a particular purpose.

The New Testament uses forms of this word to describe preparing people for ministry (2 Timothy 3:16-17), restoring fallen brethren (Galatians 6:1), and mending broken nets (Mark 1:19). Paul also used the word to describe strengthening someone’s faith (1 Thessalonians 3:10) and uniting people (1 Corinthians 1:10). Jesus said that when a disciple was ‘perfect’, they would be like their teacher (Luke 6:40).

I usually shorten the list to two words: Repair and prepare. As a pastor, I strive to heal brokenness and prepare people for their calling. As part of this, I try to foster unity and maturity within the church. We are called to be like Jesus.

If your pastor is committed to these tasks, you should be grateful. Remember to thank him or her for their dedication. If you appreciate the gift, you should be grateful to the giver. The giver of the gifts of ministry is none other than Jesus Christ.

But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.” Ephesians 4:7-8

Take time to stop and thank God for the gifts he has given you. He gave them to help you grow and mature in Christ. Be grateful and embrace the process!
