Real Disciples VII

7: You Can’t Do It Alone

The Christian life is meant to be lived in community. God designed us to work together to achieve His ends and fulfill the purpose of our individual lives. You have a gift, but you don’t have all gifts. You need other believers. We are His Body, and every part is part of Him. We are family. You cannot fulfill the will of God alone. Others inspire you to live the Christian life to the fullest. This means you will need to make forming relationships a priority. This is difficult for some, but you can do it, even if you have to learn some new skills.

Three Big Ideas to Remember:

1) Christianity is a team effort. The greats of the Bible needed help. Moses needed people. He had to have Aaron, Hur and Joshua to defeat the Amalekites. He looked to his father-in-law, Jethro, for good advice. God gave him a plan for identifying leaders and training them for service. Jesus, Himself, needed people. He looked to His disciples to help with ministry here on earth, then empowered a team to continue the ministry when He left. Exodus 17:8-15 / Exodus 18:17-23 / Numbers 11:16-30. If these guys needed people, you will need people, too:

a) Hebrews 10:24-25 to encourage you to love and good works

b) 1 Cor 12:12-27 to have all necessary gifts.

c) Romans 12:4-5 to connect to the Body.

d) Ephesians 4:16 to provide a place to do your part.

2) Your companions impact your success.

a) It is dangerous to hang with the wrong people. Avoid close relations of mutual dependence with those who don’t believe 1 Cor 15:33 / Leviticus 11:24 / 1 Kings 11:2 / Psalms 106:35 / Proverbs 22:24-25 / 2 Cor 6:14-18

b) Godly relationships bring blessing. Proverbs 13:20 We need counsel from trusted friends, and we must take care to stay at arms length with ungodly people. WE love them and serve them, but we have to choose our friends very carefully. WE tend to descend to the level of our constant companions Proverbs 13:20 / 27:6, 9, 10,17 / 12:16, 26

3) You can learn to make godly friends.

a) 1 John 1:3. Look for others who share passion for Jesus.
b) John 15:13 Put aside your own desires.
c) Proverbs 17:17. Pitch in to help.
d) Proverbs 18:24. Be friendly
e) Proverbs 27:14 Be sensitive to others
f) Proverbs 16:28 Be a loyal confidant

Somebody said: The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team. John Wooden

Here’s the Point: No matter how difficult it seems, you need godly companions. This will mean saying goodbye to some old associates and intentionally finding ways to connect with godly people. You are not designed to do this alone.

Action Steps: Find a church with an active calendar. Ask how you can get involved. Go to events and introduce yourself to others. That is how you meet people. Follow the guides in Section 3 above.
