Lord, deliver me from “relevant” sermons that give ironclad methods for victory, or holiness, or whatever. Years ago, I took a quick inventory of all the easy steps to answered prayer, financial success, or guaranteed healing that I had heard in my first few years as a Christian. My conclusion was that I would need all of eternity to actually implement all the necessary practices to assure my temporal well-being. It was a great relief to me to discover the simplicity of living with and for Jesus.
Christianity is not a list of behaviors to avoid or pursue. Following Jesus is a life-long process of developing intimacy with a living person who has direct access to my heart. There are 2 great guidelines that provide direction in nearly every circumstance: Love God and love people. When those two don’t give clarity on how to handle a specific situation, I don’t have to consult a rule book or a guru. I have the Holy Spirit on the inside of me who will always move me in the right direction. I live under the “law” of the life-giving Spirit.
As we head to the gathering of the saints, be attentive to what’s going on in your heart. That’s where the Spirit of God will interact with your reborn human spirit to refresh, instruct, and correct. He’s in there, He gives life, and He’s on your side.
