And the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” Genesis 4:10-12 ESV
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Hebrews 12:22-24
I was thinking this morning about the privilege we have as followers of Christ. We can come directly to the presence of God and know that we will be received. In fact, I have become so used to talking with the Lord that I sometimes take it for granted. My heart goes out to those who are still tormented by guilt and shame, that nagging sense that God is somehow angry with them. It keeps them in fear of the very One who can help them. Thank God for the blood of Jesus that speaks up on our behalf.
The blood of Abel cried out from the earth, demanding justice and cursing the ground under Cain’s feet. The blood of Jesus is crying out from the heavenly holy of holies where He brought it as a token of the redemption He purchased. His blood still speaks before the throne of God. It speaks eternally, conveying truths to the Father that our own failings cannot erase.
What is the blood saying today? Here are some key points to consider:
- We have been forgiven by His blood. Your sins are no longer on the record books. Ephesians 1:7
- We have been justified by His blood, declared not guilty before the court of Heaven, and therefore not subject to the wrath of God. He’s not mad at you! Romans 5:9
- We can live free from a consciousness of sin and failure. That nagging feeling of unworthiness is not from God. Hebrews 9:14
- When we do sin, we have an Advocate who pleads our case on the basis of His own blood. Confess, receive your forgiveness and get on with life. 1 John 1:7-2:2.
- We have been ransomed from the tyranny of man-made religion that demands empty rituals and brings bondage. Quit flogging yourself. 1 Peter 1:18
- We have value that is determined by the price God paid to ransom us: the blood of His only begotten Son. You are precious to God.1 Peter 1:19
- We can come boldly to the throne and speak to God without fear or shame. We always find mercy and grace to help in time of need. He is glad to see you! Hebrews 4:15-16 /10:21-22.
- The redemption He bought for you with His own blood has no expiration date. It is eternal. Don’t believe the lie that says you have exhausted His patience. Hebrews 9:11-12
Here’s the Point: When that accusing voice tries to tell you that God is mad at you and you deserve to be miserable, choose to believe the better word that the blood of Jesus is speaking. The blood that bought you still speaks. Agree with it!
Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21
