For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
Romans 12:4-5 NKJV
Sometimes we read verses and just run on without stopping to think what they said. I try to ask, “What would my life look like if I actually believed this?” When I first got saved, I was taught to do that, but the emphasis was on verses that promised healing or provision, or deliverance of some kind. I am healed because He says I am. Glory! My needs are met because He says they are. Alleluia! I am free indeed because the Son has set me free. Thank You, Jesus! I see myself as healed, prosperous, and delivered because He says I am.
How about we use that same principle for some of the “one another” verses. A dozen times we are told to love one another, but that’s not all. There are more than 3 dozen verses that tell us how to live that out. What would it look like if I believed that we are members of one another? The illustration here is of a human body with many different parts (members). Every part of my physical body is important to the other parts. Each one has the same care for all the others. Can you imagine church with that kind of connection? I’m not alone because He says I’m not, and you’re not alone for the same reason. We are connected. Selah!
Let’s try an experiment. Take these three verses and picture what it might look like if we believed them. Try these translations:
Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. (Romans 12:4-5 NLT)
We are part of the same body. Stop lying and start telling each other the truth. (Ephesians 4:25 CEV)
He did this to make all parts of the body work together smoothly, with each part caring about the others. (1 Corinthians 12:25 CEV)
