So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things. And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,
Acts 5:11-14 NKJV
This was the immediate aftermath of the deaths of Ananias and Sapphira. It got everyone’s attention. After the Lord cleansed the house, signs and wonders followed. Three things for us to remember today:
- Fear God. Many folks don’t like that. They want the Lord to be all warm and fuzzy. We often gather in His Name but ignore His Presence and holiness. He is an awesome God! (Awesome: extremely impressive or daunting; inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear.) God is not a toy or a teddy bear. Church is not a club.
- Be in one accord. Get your relationships in order. Deal with offenses and resentments and coalesce around the vision.
- When God gets real, people get scared. The presence of God is supposed to be uncomfortable for those who cling to their sin. Notice, however, that the ultimate result was that multitudes were saved. When it’s real you don’t have to sell it, just tell it.
How about we go to church today willing to do whatever is necessary to encounter God in all His holiness? He just might show up!
