Sunday Supernaturally: Changed by the Spirit

For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.

Romans 2:28-29 ESV

Years ago I heard an older preacher say, “It’s not what I say that matters, it’s what the Holy Spirit tells you about what I say.”  Sometimes we lose track of what’s really valuable in our lives as Christians.  Here, Paul told the church at Rome that the outward mark was not the important thing.  They needed an internal mark given by the Spirit.

In thinking about our church gatherings, we need to remember what’s important.  It’s great to have competent musicians, top quality sound equipment, expert lighting, poignant and polished preaching, soft seats, and air-conditioned comfort.  I love good coffee and a little lively repartee. All these, however, can be had in a bar or a coffee shop.  When I go to church, I need/want something that impacts my heart and leaves me different.

As we head to our respective places of worship today, let’s not settle for artificial piety.  Lord, give us transformation, not just information; powerful presence, not professional performance; real love for one another, not just feigned friendliness.  Let our ministers speak as the oracles of God, not pleasers of people.  Change us, Lord, by your Spirit.
