After God spoke long ago in various portions and in various ways to our ancestors through the prophets, in these last days he has spoken to us in a son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he created the world. The Son is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, and he sustains all things by his powerful word, and so when he had accomplished cleansing for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Thus he became so far better than the angels as he has inherited a name superior to theirs. Hebrews 1:1-4 NET
What an amazing description of Jesus, whom we are called to follow! He is God in human form, now seated in glory in heaven. He is the fulfillment of all the words spoken in the Law and the Prophets. He is the Message of the ages personified. He is the Creator of all things, the Heir of all things, and the One who holds it all together. He is the glory of God and the revelation of His nature.
He purchased our forgiveness with His own blood, then took His rightful seat having completed his earthly assignment. He received the Name that is above every name, and delegated the use of that Name to us. He ever lives in a glorified body of flesh, a man who is God, yet without sin. He now lives to make intercession for us as we pursue His person, His glory, and His will.
I think we sometimes forget who we’re dealing with. We tend to think of Him walking the shores of Galilee teaching and healing and interacting as a man. Maybe we see him hugging a child or chatting at supper with His friends. True, He’s still a man, but He has completed the assignment to live as one. Think of when He appeared to John, the beloved apostle, in the book of Revelation.
When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, (Revelation 1:17 ESV)
This old man had leaned on Jesus as they chatted at the Last Supper. Now he falls at His feet in holy fear.
When we gather as the local church, He has promised to be in our midst. Maybe it would be to our advantage and to His glory if we just sat and meditated on who is in the room with us. If it doesn’t shake us to our core, we have grossly underestimated who He is. The “fear not” comes after the falling at His feet: Reverence before intimacy, humility before boldness, respect before familiarity. Jesus is in the house.
